Will "Elf" be number one?
Christmas is the greatest time of year for several reasons, and one of the foremost of these is the reappearance of classic Christmas movies. Spend millions upon millions of dollars on special effects to make a movie about cars that transform into robot things if you wish, but it will never top the magic of “A Christmas Carol” or “Bad Santa”, among others. The following is a list of our personal favorite Christmas movies of all time:
10. “Bad Santa”- I don’t recommend this for family viewing on Christmas Eve, but what is a “best Christmas movies” list without this classic anti-Christmas movie movie. It takes everything you’ve ever known about Santa and totally mixes it up.
9. “The Polar Express”- Who can forget the classic Christmas tale of the magical bell that was brought to life in this computer generated classic. And for the record, I still hear the bell.
8. “Nightmare Before Christmas”- Keeping with the theme of Christmas that aren’t really Christmas movies is this creepy holiday classic. I must admit, this movie is so delightfully creepy that I make an effort to watch it yearly. It still leaves me moderately frightened.
7. “It’s a Wonderful Life”- Though I don’t this to be half the movie the rest of the world seems to think it is, it’s still a good classic and a staple of my family’s Christmas. Plus, it comes on every channel nightly between the beginning of December and Christmas, so I have to learn to love it.
6. “Miracle on 34th Street”- It’s been a while since I watched this inspirational classic, and making this list makes me want to break it out again. Who doesn’t love a good “get Santa out of jail” plotline.
5. “Deck the Halls”- Okay, so this one is more of a guilty pleasure than a universally praised Christmas movie. Sure not many people liked it, but what isn’t awesome about putting Christmas lights on your house until you can see it from space? Plus, Danny DeVito is so short that it makes little Kristin Chenoweth (his wife in the film) look tall, which always makes me laugh.
4. “National Lampoons Christmas Vacation”- This movie is just hilarious. It successfully tackles all the bad things people think about Christmas, but just won’t admit.
3. “The Santa Clause”- Though my memory of this film is slightly scarred by the subsequent releases of the franchise (the idea of this movie is not one that lends itself to multiple sequels), who doesn’t love this classic about never giving up on Christmas? I will always be enamored by the setup of the movie’s North Pole, no matter how many times I watch.
2. “Elf”- Will Ferrell and Christmas: This is a combination no one should soon forget. If I had to guess, I’d say I’ve watched “Elf” more than any other movie, across all genres. It’s impossible to tire of the laughs upon laughs, from Buddy’s obsession with syrup to his escapades with Jack Daniels in the mail room. In fact, I’ve already watched this one twice this year.
1. “A Christmas Story”- Though I probably enjoy “Elf” more, “A Christmas Story” is truly the best Christmas movie of all time. It encompasses every aspect of the season with comedy and sincerity, not to mention the classic “tongue-stuck-on-a-frozen-poll-myth”. This movies will only get old when humans stop watching movies.
