You betcha I want bendy straws!
Here are the details for those who missed it: Students at California State University, Stanislaus requested the fine print regarding Sarah Palin’s agreement to speak at the campus. The university foundation that was sponsoring the event said they had no such document, forcing some extremely motivated students to dig through trash cans until they could piece the document together, including some sections that were shredded. On the documents, students discovered that Sarah had requested a first class from her Anchorage home, a one bedroom suite, an SUV caravan to the venue, and a podium stocked with bendy straws and bottled water. The students weren’t, however, able to find the amount Palin was paid for the visit.
Many are upset that the foundation lied in an effort to cover-up the great deal of effort they went through to secure the Palin speech. I completely understand their argument; the documents should have been released when the students and foundation contributers asked to see them. In fact, the California State Attorney General is looking into the matter to see if the foundation took part in punishable actions.
While there are those who are rightfully upset, there is also the group that’s up in arms over Palin’s lengthy request sheet. While I’ll admit those are fairly excessive demands, that’s the price you pay to land a speech from one of the most well-known politician-celebrities (pollebrities, as I call them) in the country. So what if she wants bendy straws with her water; give her the bendy straws or don’t get the speech. It’s as simple as that.

I have to think that public servants, if they are speaking from the perspective of being a public servant (a politician) should aim for somewhat more humble requests. That sounds rock-star-like in the specificity and excess. However, it is true that if they want her to speak, pay the price. The coverup, however, is out of line. If the university if a public institution the accounting of her visit should be public record, given upon request, and if they are proud to have brought her then stand behind granting her requests. Simple enough. Shredding the documents only adds to the image of guilt.
First post?
What would anger me most if I were a student there would be what $$$ they were paying her to speak. As a student who pays a large tuition to go to school, I would want to know how much they are paying someone to talk at my school since I am basically paying for it!
I agree with Claudia’s statement above. I think it is ridiculous to have such high standards above “normal” citizens. If someone asked me to speak at a campus, I would be thrilled if they paid my expenses for a economy class flight and a normal hotel room. I wouldn’t ask for bendy straws or anything excessive.
I am a Republican, but will remember how picky she is if she decided to run for office.
Ok, just to correct Jeff, she is no longer a public servant. She quit being govenor of Alaska about a year ago. Also to Claudia, colleges pay big bucks all the time for various speakers. I bet a little research and you will see the exorbitant amount that Al Gore gets for his college speeches purporting a lie. What about when Louis Farakan speaks? Look it up, you’ll be surprised at how much these people get for speeches. I’m sure there are a lot of petty little “requests” or demands they all have. I just think these kids had a bias against Sarah Palin and were looking for anything to malign her, just like the lame stream media has been doing since day one. I’m not a sloberer over Sarah Palin but put female and conservative together and your screwed. Also to Susan, she’s not a normal person, she was just the only second female to run for vice presidency in united states history, a normal person probably wouldn’t be asked to speak at a college event.
I agree with trishden, she is not a normal person, and people who are asked to speak at college events are high paid individuals who can demand whatever they want. However, I don’t think that she will run for the presidency, and if she does she won’t get the republican ticket because republicans are not stupid – the GOP wants someone running who doesn’t get made fun of constantly for her lack of intelligence and learning.
She’s a nut, the plain kind!
would they have complained if a liberal had such a list of demands? Would they have gone through the trash? Don’t think so.
Ppl are just looking for anything to discredit her.
That said, I personally think the list was a bit much but then I don’t know if that is standard or even a small list as compared to others.
