I’ve been blogging since October of 2008, and one of the most enjoyable aspects of the experience has been meeting other bloggers and find new blogs to follow.  I recently (re)descovered SpillingBuckets.com and got to discuss a little bit about the blog with its owners, Ryan and Leslie.  Of all of the bloggers I’ve met, these two may be the passionate about their subject matter.

They started the blog in March 2008 as a personal journal and as a way to allow the people of the internet (sequal to “Children of the Corn”) to follow their journey as they began to bail themselves out of debt.  Ryan and Leslie set 4 goals for themselves at the start of their blogging, 3 of which have been reached (They saved up a 1-year emergency fund of $20,000, bought a home last summer, and achieved a positive net worth in January 2010.  They’re 4th and final goal is to become totally debt free).

As time has pressed on, more has evolved than just the blog.  In Ryan’s words:

Today our efforts revolve around self reliance and freedom.  Not just freedom from debt and financial obligation, but also freedom from neglect in areas of our lives.  It was strange. One day we woke up had a “Mad as hell!” moment (see this video)  The problem with many things is that they are not only easy to do, they are also easy not to do.  Fitness, eating healthy, clutter, and consumption, things we are determined to not have affect us negatively over time.

We realized that it’s not the circumstances around us that affect our lives the most, it’s how we react to those circumstances. There was no one to blame but ourselves if things weren’t how we wanted them to be.

The blog continues to evolve as we do and has become a valuable resource for discussions of traditional and non-traditional ideas relating to personal finance, political and financial philosophies, a history of our nations financial and political decision making, and most importantly a discussion of the most incredible thing we have: freedom, and how we can design our lives to maximize this, and equally as important, help others see the ability they have to affect freedom in their own lives.

At Spilling Buckets, Ryan and Leslie have run numerous posts of interests including several different regarding national debt (How you can fix it, and why you should care), a debate about laws, and a very interesting look at The Great Depression and our current situation.  I don’t definitely recommend those links, as well as checking out their net worth tracking posts, where they keep track of each months net worth gains/losses as they’re happening.  That’s my personal favorite aspect of the blog.
