Tonight’s big debate between Sharron Angle and Harry Reid was moderated by Mitch Fox of Nevada PBS fame. Senator Reid gave an extremely dry and even-keeled opening statement, full of nostalgic looks at his time growing up. Angle spent her full opening statement offering up the stark contrasts between herself and Reid, making sure that she included that Reid was a part of Washington when the economic mess all went down. Much like Chris Coon and Christine O’Donnell during last night’s debate in Delaware, Harry Reid came across as a seasoned politician (albeit a bit dull), and Sharron Angle came across as an American who cares about the future of our nation. Sure, Harry Reid said articulated his answers better than Mrs. Angle, but she did a fine job getting her points across. She was even able to give a good answer regarding her recent comments about abolishing the Department of Education. Unlike O’Donnell last night, Angle made no major gaffes, which is really where the bar was set by many in the media. In a race that’s as tight as this one, this debate could give Angle the extra boost she needs to push her ahead.
Angle gave solid explanations to back up many of her more controversial claims from the campaign trail, and made a good little zinger when she challenged Reid to read bills before he votes on them. Reid, on the other hand, tried to paint a picture that he’s fiscally conservative with the budget, while also taking time to point out the accomplishments of ObamaCare and other big-ticket items. Surely the Nevada electorate knows this isn’t the Harry Reid that’s been a Senator for over 20 years, and they won’t fall for his campaign rhetoric.
The most striking comments by either opponent tonight was from Harry Reid, who said his goal with ObamaCare was to give every American the same plan he is blessed with as a member of Congress. Senator Reid, that’s a complete lie and you know it. The Congressional Healthcare package is the finest plan anyone could ask for. If you want Americans to have the same healthcare plan as you, why would you refuse to forfeit your congressional plan in favor of the ObamaCare plan?
