“There’s a Place for Us” by Carrie Underwood
3.5 out of 5 stars
For those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of meeting me or reading my commentary before, I’m a tough critic. And I don’t like much. But for whatever reason, I have taken quite an affinity for Mrs. Carrie Underwood in recent months. I don’t love her unconditionally, but the last few performances I’ve seen of hers have been stunning. However, all good things must come to an end, and Underwood’s latest song “There’s a Place for Us” threw a massive wrench in what was the longest positive streak any artist has had with me since…. well, ever. That’s not to say that “There’s a Place for Us” is complete garbage; it accomplishes everything it was created to do as far as fitting in with The Chronicles of Narnia movie goes. I’ll even venture to say that, despite it’s over-sized helpings of Velveeta, Underwood and team did a really nice job writing it to fit the movie. There’s just no place for this (no pun intended) on radio, nor is there a place for this on my iPod. The sound is outdated, and a bit overdone in places.
But looking past the song itself, it’d be ignorant to ignore the fact that Underwood delivers a very impressive vocal performance on the song. Underwood’s ability to never hit a wrong note live and in studio is the main reason that even though I find “There’s a Place for Us” totally irrelevant, there’s still a place for Carrie (I could go on for days), albeit only recently developed, in my heart.
