Gay Marriage Approved In New York State: Why Conservatives Shouldn’t Care

In a 33-29 vote, the New York State Senate voted to legalize same-sex marriage in the state.  Unlike other states, however, New York’s marriage laws allow for non-residents to be married in the state, opening the door for out-of-state same-sex couples to take advantage of the opportunity to tie the knot while they can.  While most conservatives are up in arms, predictably, about this decision, at least one conservative (myself) is glad to have that marked off the political to-do list.

  • We can focus back on what really matters: First and foremost, marriage equality will never be as important as the economy, the conflict in Libya, or healthcare reform.  It’s a social issue and quite frankly, I think discussion about harmless social issues should come when you have all the hardcore stuff straightened out, and we definitely aren’t there yet.  Honestly, I’d rather a sweeping “okay” on gay marriage across the nation than have everyone become sidetrack every few months because another state is working on equality.
  • Being able to marry doesn’t make homosexuals more “gay”: If you are one that is bothered by the gay lifestyle, this one is for you.  I personally don’t care about anyone’s sexual preference but mine and my wife’s, but for those that are bothered by same-sex couples, chew on this: There is nothing about a marriage certificate that makes homosexuals more gay; if anything it keeps the same-sex marriage debate quiet so, theoretically, you hear far less about it.  If they have their equal rights, there is no need to protest and be full of activism.
  • The churches will be protected: This where my qualms with legalized same-sex marriage used to stem from.  While I have no problem with same-sex marriage being legalized, I do have major problems with imposing same-sex marriages on churches that don’t wish to perform such ceremonies.  The Christian church stands firmly against same-sex marriage and in such a way should not be forced to carry out same-sex weddings should they so choose.  Thankfully, the New York bill spells (or is said to spell out) rather plainly that churches are protected form discrimination lawsuits for refusing to marry same-sex couples.  Couples can either look to find a church that will, or beebop down to the courthouse and handle it there.  As long as churches aren’t forced into ceremonies that conflict with their doctrine, I see no problem with same-sex marriage.

What do you think about the New York vote?  Would you vote in favor of such legislation?  Why/Why not?

  1. Thank you for this. I also get very frustrated by people who focus on this issue instead of working towards solutions for problems that really do affect everyone, such as the economy.

I do question your use of the “Christian church” as though it’s all one big happy family. Many, many, many Christian churches exist in the world (Catholic, Protestant, Lutheran, Anglican, Episcopalian – just to name a few of the majors), and I would be willing to bet that some church somewhere that follows a Christian doctrine would be willing to perform same sex marriages.

Finally, my biggest problem with the people who object to same sex marriages is that they usually seem to suggest that same sex marriage will destroy the sanctity of marriage and the structure of the family. Sorry, I know plenty of people who call themselves Christians and/or conservatives who are okay with people living together (“in sin” we called it in the old days), having sex outside of marriage, and bearing illegitimate children (“Marriage is a really big commitment,” they say, as though bringing a child into the world is no big deal). They are the ones destroying American (and global) society, much more than gay people who want a recognized, legitimate relationship.

I’m glad to see that someone else agrees on what the big issues facing our country are. I was beginning to worry there for a minute!

As for my comments on the Christian church, a same-sex couple would surely be able to find a church somewhere who would perform the ceremony, but by-and-large, Christian churches aren’t ready for that yet. Regardless, I was more pointing out that I would be extremely opposed to Christian churches being forced to perform ceremonies or being faced with discrimination lawsuits for noncompliance. As you said, many of those claiming to be upset about destroying the sanctity of marriage are tearing down those walls from the inside.

Thanks for taking the time to make a great, respectful argument. Hope to see you again!
