Poll: Gallup
Dates Conducted: July 20-24

Mitt Romney- 17%
Rick Perry- 15%
Sarah Palin- 12%
Michele Bachmann- 11%
Rudy Giuliani- 11%
Ron Paul- 8%
Herman Cain- 3%
Gingrich- 3%
Pawlenty- 2%
Rick Santorum- 2%

While Front-runner Mitt Romney has managed to retain his front-runner status even amid growing buzz for his opponents, it’s worth noting that his lead is not nearly as wide as it was several weeks ago when he was leading the pack by nearly 20 points.  This poll also seems to confirm that Texas Governor Rick Perry has massive potential to shake-up the Republican nomination race should he enter.  With Rudy Giuliani, Perry, and Sarah Palin (none of which have confirmed they’ll run) out of the picture, Romney stretches his lead to 9 points, with his nearest competitor Michele Bachmann.

Bottom Line

This poll should not inspire much confidence for Mitt Romney.  Though he leads currently, the margin has been cut in half over a month ago (and nearly eliminated with Perry in the mix), and he has shown no signs of growth as of late.  Romney’s problem is that he’s been around the block a couple of times when it comes to campaigning.  Voters know him enough to have already formed an opinion of him, putting him at a sort of plateau; somewhere a politician never wants to be a year out from the election.

Let me just say that it will be a dark day for America if Rick Perry gets close to the White House. I did an interview with him back at Texas A&M…what an idiot. You know that leadership quality that everyone wants in their president, he doesn’t have it.

Rick Perry would be a TERRIBLE GOP choice in 2012, he’s a horrible excuse for a governor who lacks real leadership quality. This is coming from someone who lives in Texas and has enough of his BS.
